TMT (thermo-mechanically treated) reinforcement bars are covered by IS 1786. The grade you need is set by your structural engineer’s drawing.

Fe 500D is another grade defined in IS 1786, with a 500 MPa minimum yield and higher ductility. If your drawing specifies it, tell us and we will confirm availability.

What Are TMT Bars and Why Are They Used?

TMT bars are steel reinforcement bars used inside concrete columns, beams, slabs and foundations. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, so the steel bars carry the tension.

In the thermo-mechanical treatment process, the hot rolled bar is rapidly cooled with water and then self-tempers. This gives a hard outer layer and a softer, ductile core, so the bar is strong yet can bend without breaking. That is why TMT bars replaced older plain and twisted bars in most construction.
